The Art of Surfacing
Just why is Annette Grey on holiday in Austria with her obsessive compulsive boss, Glenda?
She’s not even sure herself but at least it’s a distraction from the mess her life is in. Her husband has left her to live with a quantity surveyor (whatever one of those is) called Sigourney and Annette feels she is slightly detached from reality. Glenda’s holiday itinerary, executed with almost military precision, doesn’t leave her much time for brooding.
It’s not until they move on to Salzburg that Annette begins to feel part of the world again, especially when she meets Gavin, a gorgeous American who lives in the city. Despite Glenda’s incessant organisation of their time and an unpleasant encounter with a strange local man, Annette is sad when she has to leave. Back in England her worries and sadness crowd back in on her and only her very young brother brings some happiness into her life. But then events turn sour and her relationship with her family is strained to the limit. Even Glenda can’t help her this time. Running back to Salzburg and hoping to meet up again with Gavin, Annette finds comfort from a most unexpected source.
She confronts the memory of long ago heartbreak before she can look to the future and find contentment.
